Karen Fox returns to her childhood home in Sonoma County after the apparent suicide of her father; but she quickly becomes enmeshed in a series of supernatural incidents involving an ancient Mayan deity and the resurrected bodies of women who have been sacrificed. The god’s actions threaten the safety of the entire world unless Karen and her cohort of misfits can come to humanity’s rescue.
This novel was first published in 2008 under the name Lynn Cesar, the pseudonym used by Michael Shea’s wife, Linda; but, as she clarifies in a new foreword, the book was written entirely by her husband. In it, Michael Shea infuses both his love of the locale that was his home for many years and his admiration for the strong women characters who populate this vivid tale.
Apricot Brandy has waited too long to be recognized as the work of one of the pioneering writers of contemporary weird fiction. Now it can find a new and appreciative audience.
